How We Work
A different kind of partnership.
Most firms that call themselves partners are investors first. They write a check, take a board seat, and weigh in at quarterly reviews. The daily decisions, the early pivots, the moments where the company's direction gets set are largely left to the founder. FORMER works differently. We are in the work from the beginning, building alongside the founder through every consequential stage. The relationship comes before the capital and stays long after it.
The earliest decisions carry the most weight. That is where FORMER starts.
What Embedded Actually Means
Embedded means FORMER is present at the stages most partners never see. Before the product exists, before the team is formed, before the pitch has a shape. It means contributing to the strategic and operational decisions that determine whether the company gets off the ground and stays on course.
In practice that means bringing the capabilities a founding team needs but cannot yet afford to build internally. Some of those are core and ongoing. Strategy, operations, product direction, go-to-market. Others are specialized and occasional. Legal, financial modeling, design, technical architecture. Rather than asking a first-time founder to figure out what they need and go find it, we bring the right resource at the right moment. The founder stays focused on what only they can do.
The gap between a great idea and a real company is filled by people who know what goes in the middle.
How We Engage
FORMER does not work with everyone and does not move quickly to commitment. Before any partnership is formed there is a process. Structured, honest, and designed to get to the right answer as fast as possible.
That process runs in both directions. We evaluate whether the opportunity is real, whether the founder is the right person to build it, and whether the timing is right. The founder evaluates whether we are the right partner for them. The fit, the working dynamic, the alignment on what they are building and why.
Ideas get validated early. Some do not survive that process. That is not a failure. It is the point. A faster no saves everyone from a slower, more expensive one. What moves forward does so with genuine conviction on both sides.
How the Partnership Is Structured
FORMER works through multiple partnership models depending on the stage, the founder, and the opportunity. There is no single structure that fits every situation and we do not try to force one.
What every model has in common is full alignment of interests. Our return depends entirely on the company's success. The structure is always designed to reflect that to ensure that every decision we make as a partner is made in the interest of building something that lasts.
The specifics get worked out as part of the engagement process. What matters first is whether the fit is right.
